Purchasers of Dell Laptops beware! I have experienced nothing but problems since I purchased my refurbished Inspiron 5000 in Jan. 2001. I am a computer systems manager for a Big 5 consulting firm and have worked with many brands of laptops and have never seen a more poor performing laptop than my Dell!

Here is a brief summary of the items that need to be replaced since purchase:
1) The Floppy Drive
2) LCD Screen
3) Hard Drive (in which I lost 60% of my data as a result)
4) Power cord
5) Touchpad mouse
6) Motherboard

After the LCD screen I requested a replacement of the system, to which the support person said Not to worry about it, there should not be an issue going forward' (if you hear this don't believe it!). And now, even with all the issues, time, frustration and inconvenience Dell's response to a system is replacement is Sorry, you are outside of the 30 day window of initial purchase' and That being the major component of the system all the issues of the system should be resolved.' Now bear in mind that many of the parts used to fix' my system were refurbished parts. If the original refurbished parts failed so easily, why would I have faith that the above fixes' will address my problems?

Each time a failure occurred I invariably incurred anywhere from 3 to 8 days until a rep came to repair my system which left me without the use of my laptop in many cases. Add to that the time required to go meet with the rep and the actual repair of the system and you can begin to imagine the frustration and cost I incurred repeatedly. And the loss of data goes without saying how many of you have lost data that is not easily recoverable or impossible to recover? Even when trying to justify the cost of Dell having to send repair technicians 6 times and the parts to replace my failed ones I was met with little care or concern.

Bottom line is this: Dell is marketing and selling poor quality machinery so beware! And they are not willing to stand behind their product. I'm sure they are such a large company that the dissatisfaction of a single customer (me) doesn't even raise an eyebrow for Dell. But for me, the customer who dropped over 2 Gs on a piece of machinery from a reputable' manufacturer I expected more!
