The International Library of Poets (www.poetry.com) should be ASHAMED. Their whole business is simply for gain. I hear rumors that your work will only be published if you buy the anthology. I have read nothing but trash about them.
I submitted one poem and since have receieved much contact about my poem being published, receiving an editor's choice award, being chosen for Sounds of Poetry (set to music, professionally read) and even being invited to a so-called 'convention' where I will be honored and possibly get a contract... Yadda yadda.
This happens to anyone who enters! This is a crying shame. People get their hopes up and excited to discover that it's nothing but a marketing ploy. I should have been wiser and chosen different avenues to pursue my writing dreams, but this is definitely an eye-opening experience.
The point is that they make themselve out to be something that they're not, and to the naive eye, you think you've struck gold. Right on the Better Business Bureau's website, it says...
The company is a vanity publisher of hardbound anthologies, which feature amateur poets, of paperback volumes of poetry by single authors, and of a magazine for amateur poets. The books are not distributed and cannot be found in bookstores. They are only distributed to those who pay to have their work included.
