Consistently ripoffs off their contract workers and other vendors

We seek bring to your attention the unscrupulous business practices of The Coastal Group, a publishing company at 619 West 54th Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10019 and its subsidiary, Redscope LLC. We were independent contractors for Redscope, The Coastal Group's Internet marketing division.

Unbeknownst to us when we began working for The Coastal Group, the company has a long history of not paying its independent contractors and other external vendors.in fact, the company was featured on WABC Channel 7 News earlier this year for this offense. One of the workers featured in the segment had lost his apartment and was forced to live in a homeless shelter because he was owed $4000 from the Coastal Group. Over 2003 and 2004 we have all been owed several weeks of back pay; mostly in the thousands of dollars. The officers of Redscope and Coastal continually promised that we would receive our pay according to the bi-weekly schedule the company distributed to all contractors, but payments were always in arrears as much as 6 to 8 weeks, and usually those payments were incomplete. Some contractors (no longer working for the company) are still owed monies for work completed in the beginning of 2004.

Finally, employment agencies will no longer work with The Coastal Group.in the Fall of the company was sued for breach of contract by Staffing Unlimited, a local agency, for being in arrears of what may be as much as $400,000. It is now well known to us that The Coastal Group has had similar issues with several of its vendors.

It is the POLICY of Redscope and the Coastal Group not to pay their contracted workers on time. Given poor accounting and business practices, most weeks the two companies are short on their receivables and it is always the contracted employees who are not paid first.

What can be done when even with judgments against them Redscope and Coastal don't pay??? Many freelancers are scared to leave because they are owed so much money and know that once they do leave, they'll never get paid. The civil court is quick to hand out judgments in the favor of the contracted employees who are owed money, but Redscope and Coastal still refuse to pay, knowing from experience how far they can push the legal system without ramifications.

Please, avoid Redscope and the Coastal Group at all cost!!! The owners, Todd and David Weiss, secretly brag about the fact that they don't pay their contractors. Unless laws change to make the penalties for such slimey business practices more prohibitive, their unscrupulous behavior may continue for a long time to come.
