Massage Envy
Could not cancel 12 month agreement after 3 days locked in for 12 months. Weather you receive massage or not

This letter is in regards to a company called: Massage Envy in South Portland, Maine and I need to express some concerns with this company. I went in for a massage earlier in the year due to unresolved upper back discomfort due to physical labor. At the end of the massage therapy that I had I went to check out at the front desk and a nice girl was looking to sign me up for a good deal to get more massages in the future. I was in a good mood and was easily and very quickly signed up with their contract. I said to my self I will give her the five minutes to sign up and cancel later feeling a little uncomfortable they try to get you into a contract on your way out of a relaxing therapy, realizing she was just doing her job I signed up. So a week goes by and I found myself thinking a contract for an entire year is not necessary and didnt like the idea of being locked into paying $50 dollars a month for the next year. I then called Massage Envy to cancel the new membership. The nice girl on the phone said I could not cancel and that there is only 3 days allowed to cancel their contract. She said I would have to have a Doctors note or would have to have moved in order to break contract. I told her I was moving in April of this year. She said I could freeze the account at that time and cancel once I have moved. She froze the account and I didnt hear from them for months. They tried to put a charge on my credit card that I had initially used to set up the account with them and the charge was declined due to me not using that credit card anymore and it was closed. Massage Envy contacts me by phone on requesting payment. I told the girl I had recently moved and that I had spoken with the office prior to cancel and would like to follow through by canceling the contract. She said she would like a piece of mail showing that I had moved. I sent in a piece of mail for proof of my new residence. Unfortunately the piece of mail I sent was sent to the wrong address for Massage Envy that I got off the internet to get their address and was returned. A couple months go by and I didnt hear from Massage Envy and I thought that perhaps the piece of mail was not that important and the girl I was speaking with had just followed through with the cancelation by taking my new address over the phone. Massage envy sends me another piece of mail that had been forwarded from my old address to my new address saying they would be sending my account to a collections agency. I immediately followed up the letter with a call to Liz Jones the Clinic Administrator. I explained to her that I had moved and wanted the contract cancelled as requested before. She asked where did I move to and when I told her, she looked up my address and said that it was not far enough from Massage Envy and stated I had to be 25 miles or more from Massage Envy in order to cancel. The distance if you will was never communicated to me prior to this conversation!!! She said I have to settle my account by paying a bill of $300.00!! I had one massage from them and they are charging me for services that I did not receive. I feel that I am being ripped off and taken advantage of.in the economy that we live in this is unacceptable. I really think a $300.00 cancelation fee is much too heavy. Your thoughts, guidance and direction to extract myself from this binding and not medically necessary service would be greatly appreciated.
