Unscrupolous Business Practices

Optimum Benefit group, is a health insurance company located in Farmington Michigan. They hire independent insurance agents to grow their agency.

Beware to anyone who is thinking about joining their company. Some things to be aware of. 1) You will never sign any paper work stating that you are a captive agent (meaning you can not write business for any other insurance carrier or agency) 2) If you are not licensed they will charge you a minimum of $600 to get started with them 300 of which is for a kaplan course (not recommended) and 300 for lead generation.

My problem started soon after I became an agent with them and expensing my 600 dollars, when they found out that I was writing business for other carriers and agencies they terminated my appointment with them, and never paid back the money I invested for the lead generations. Legally they can not hold any one as a captive agent.

They want the best of both worlds in a sense where they pay independent agents commission only no base salary, for a few poor leads they generate, and want to hold you captive so that you're not free to represent your cleints with more product offering beyond Optimum Benefit products which limits your potential to service your clients and ultimately lowers your income as an agent for them. Dealing with this company will cost you more than money, but time and resources.

Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way. I hope this reaches everyone who may be considering going to work with this company to at least know what to expect right from the beginning.
