Jack Shabanian Extra costs, tricks, misinformation, taken advantage of

The problem I encountered with Hawthorne Family Dental is the actual dentist Jack Shabanian. He was extremely vague with me every time I would inquire about the costs. I went in initially to replace a filling that had fallen out. He took some x-rays which were $85. From the x-rays he determined that I had a total of 4 cavities, he also told me that he would look at the x-rays in depth and determine if I would need a root canal in the molar where the fillings had fallen out. He then asked me if I want to do the "cleaning" now or later. He insinuated that the cleaning was part of the procedure, so I said go ahead and do it now to get it over with.

During my following visits I asked the receptionist a couple of times the total costs, she had told me that next time I come in she would have that information for me. I didn't have that information until my root canal was completely finished. She then told me that the total cost was $1665 which included that optional cleaning I never approved of, the x-rays, the "cleanout" for the root canal, the actual root canal, and the crown and cap. All in all the dentist was very poor in communicating with me my options and costs. I left that office feeling as if I had been taken advantage of because I had applied for a care credit card I feel they threw in some extra charges. I feel tricked and upset at the way he handled my business.

Besides the costs, after and during the root canal procedure I experienced a lot of pain, which came as a surprise because everyone I had spoken to regarding the root canal procedure had told me that it is not that painful. During the procedure he was insensitive to my pain and told me that he couldn't do anything about it, that the pressure was normal. I would have accepted that but the pain I was feeling was not pressure but rather the actual nerves exposed. It was a nightmarish experience to say the least.
