Harrassed and wrongfully sent to collections from a local dentist

Last seen at the dental office on September. Balance of the dental bills was a $0 balance, told by a employee that worked in his office at that time, she no longer works with the company. After she had left his employment. We then got a bill for $737.80 in December. We have made payments in good faith and now he has turned me into collections, and it hasn't been a 30 day late. He will not accept another payment. I called the office today on 3-12-08 @ 8:00am and they have informed me that they will not except it because it was sent to a collection agency. I have been Harrassed everyday for 2 months to pay this & I had made the payments. What are my rights in this matter?
