LA Fitness would be a great place to get fit if they didn't try to bleed you for every dime in their contract. Upon signing up my wife and I had to pay a sign-up fee and the "last month" up front, which is a sly way of charging us an extra $70 on sign-up; what percentage of customers do you think go to the gym after cancelling their membership? Nonetheless, I recognized this at the time and—ignoring the sales guy—just added this to the total cost of signing up.

The surprise for me is finding out their cancellation procedure: you must mail in a form to their corporate office, asking them to cancel your membership AFTER 60 DAYS. The sales guy who sold me this contract never disclosed this. I will pay a total of $140 to quit the gym, plus whatever time it takes this nonsense form to arrive at the corporate office.

I would like to emphasize the following: what does a gym need 60 days notice for? A landlord requires half the time, and actually does something when the tenant leaves. Ignoring the fact that I was not told about this contractual obligation, what does a gym need this time for?

Hey, LA Fitness: if you need a little more money, by all means charge more. Don't steal.
