If you want directbuy to leave you alone (I worked for them) you can't just say "I'm not interested." If you do that, your name will stay in the system and they will wait two weeks and then call you again, and they justify this by saying "oh, they aren't interested now, but they may be in the (very near) future!" You can yell and swear and belittle the person on the other end of the phone, and they will just say that you are NI, then wait a couple of weeks and go through it all over again. The ONLY way to get them to stop bothering you is by telling them to take you off their call list. If you do that and they continue to call you, they can be fined $10,000 and believe me, they will take it out on the call center person who didn't mark you as "do not call". They do not want to deal with that. However, if you tell directbuy to take you off their call list, don't think that means that other telemarketers from other companies won't call you. You have to say it to each individual company that calls you.

Also, please don't take it out on the telemarketers. I have been employed off and on since I got laid off from my job of 10 years, and finally, after being unable to find a job for almost 2 months, I went to directbuy when I became very concerned that I would not be able to feed my family. I knew what I was doing to people, and it made me sick to my stomach (I had to keep a picture of my son in front of me at my desk while calling people to remind me why I was doing it because I was so ashamed of it.)

To top it off, I am an extremely timid person and my anxiety was through the roof the entire time I sat there. I used to come up with many excuses to just take as much time as possible away from my cubicle. When you're at your cubicle, the computer randomly dials people on the list (a list which, btw, is given to directbuy from other companies that you provided with your personal information, who in turn sold to directbuy - it's no coincidence that many of the people on the list "just bought a new home" or "are doing some remodeling" or even have, for the most part, at least a $50,000 income.) Once you put "NI" or "answering machine" the computer automatically dials the next # on the list. If you don't answer the phone, it cycles back to your # again, up until 9:00 pm, at which time we must be off the phone. I would hate calling people after 8:30 because they would become furious (they were in bed, etc.) But if we hung up the phone before 9:00, we'd get in trouble. The job itself was horrible without having people yelling at us. We would make 300 calls per day. I guess a lot of people became immune to it, but all the way to the end, I could not wait until I found another job.
