MindQuiz Cell Phone Phishing Ripoff Scam

Electronics and household app.

This outfit phishes for your cell phone number in various ways, such as offering IQ tests on the Internet and then, only at the end, you are told that the results will be sent to your cell phone. Or you may be enticed into filling out a survey and someplace during the survey you will be asked for your cell phone number using some pretense or another.

However these scammers manage to get your cell phone number, you will receive a text message from them which they will then claim is a service you signed up for. You will then get a line item on your next cell phone bill for the price of that service (a fee of $9.99 appeared on my bill). My wife got trapped this way and immediately texted back a single word: unsubscribe.

The texts did stop, but the bill was still there. Now, I'm having to fight with T-Mobile over removing the fraudulent charge from our bill. I fail to understand why any reputable cell phone company would allow scammers to rip off consumers using their billing department as enforcers for their scams.

I complained to T-Mobile about their relationship with this scammer, but T-Mobile defended the scammer by stating that "some people do find this service useful." Maybe, but its totally unethical.

I was able to get T-Mobile to put a block on my account for services of this type. However, that will also prevent any downloads of any content whatsoever. So, another complaint against T-Mobile is that they can't discriminate between these scams that "some people" might wish to pay for and legitimate businesses that need to bill for their services this same way (like TeleNav GPS mapping services).
