Vista Notebook Has Constant Problems With DVDs

I bought a m-series notebook in august 07. It is OS obviously windows vista, since purchasing the machine I've had only complications looking to get the machine to see dvdis or obtain program improvements that allegedly are to " assist " but appear simply to further the issues along.

I've tried the internet " specialized aid" which is of no help whatsoever
