Mitsubishi HDTV—Failure to make good on a defective product

Electronics and household app.

E-mail sent to MDEA on 6/11/08:

I purchased a Mitsubishi WD-62825 widescreen TV in March for $4999.99. I believed at the time that this TV was the top of the line and for a while the TV was perfect. However, problems began with it in June when a cooling fan motor burned out. That fan was replaced and I've gotten almost a year out of it before a new problem developed.

The new problem is one which I understand is quite common with the Mitsubishi DLP TVs, i.E. The inability to turn on the TV and the constant blinking power/reset green light. I called MDEA under my Mitsubishi Extended Warranty, Contract # W300227428. MDEA authorized me to call an authorized Mitsubishi repair center, Dumas Electronics, Fairfax, VA 22031.

Dumas Electronics came to my home on May 22. The repairman said he knew exactly what was wrong, that the capacitors on the DM module were defective and that he would take the module to his shop and repair it. He returned to my home on June 5, and re-installed the module. It did not work. He then removed the module again and said that it would have to be sent to Georgia for repair and that that process would take 6 weeks. We would also then have to schedule another time for him to come back to re-install it.

Needless to say, I am not pleased that this TV has failed after barely 3 years of use. Having spent $5000.00 plus another $425.00 for the extended warranty means that to watch this TV has cost me about $150.00 per month. Additionally, I am paying for HD service from my cable company and am not able to watch HDTV without my HD television. As it now stands, I will not be able to watch the Summer Olympics on my HDTV. I find this situation unsatisfactory.

After having read the numerous complaints from other Mitsubishi TV owners, I have no confidence that this TV will ever be repaired to a reliable state. I would like a full reimbursement fo rthe cost of this TV or failing that I request that Mitsubishi provide a replacement TV. I appreciate your consideration in this matter. Thank you.

7/23/08: Still no resolution. I have been without my HDTV for over 60 days now and sonehow MDEA finds this acceptable. They do not stand behind their products. I would urge all consumers to avoid Mitsubishi TVs as they are inferior and the company does not have good customer service. Please see this link for additional info: http://forums.
