Cancelled my account with Sprint and switched to Verizon only to find out I "signed" a verbal contract

I switched my account from Sprint to Verizon when I thought I was out of contract. Well about 2 months later i get a phone call from a collection agency saying I owed $235 for a contract cancellation fee. Apparently I "signed" a "verbal" contract with Sprint for 2 years. Also Sprint said i should have gotten a letter in the mail telling me I was now in contract. Needless to say I never got the letter. Funny considering I moved to Maryland two days after I switched to Verizon and had a change of address form completed the day I arrived in Maryland. All my other bills and mail managed to find me with out incident what happened to Sprint? So when I talked to the collection agency and Sprint I told them I was disputing the cancellation fee and I was getting a lawyer.
