Rip-off! Highway robbery rates: $20.34 for 4 minute ($4.93 per minute) phone call to city only 30 miles away! Rip-off!

In October I was in a city only 30 minutes from my home town and I was running late to pick up my children. I stopped at a gas station to use their payphone to call a friend who could pick up my children.

While reviewing my bank statement, I found a debit for $20.34 with a phone number listed. That number was (800) 276-1111. I called the number to ask why the number to inquire about the charge, only to find out it was for a 4 minute phone call.

I was told that I should not have made the phone call if I didn't know the rates (How could I? The rates weren't even posted and I had no reason to believe that I was going to be charged such an outrageous amount).

When I commented that the amount was outrageous, that it was highway robbery, and that there should be a law, the operator told me that he would credit me $7.90 since I was unaware of their charges. He also told me that it would take 30 to 60 days for them to return the credit to my card.

What really makes me mad is that I made a phone call to Mexico for 2 minutes (which cost me less than $2.00) and yet it cost me $11.85 for a 4 minute phone call to a city only 30 minutes away. Where does this company get off charging more for local long distance than it costs to call another country?

Opticom should be put out of business before they take advantage of anyone else! They should also have to reimburse those that they have taken advantage of, as well as pay a hefty fine for their greed.
