Rip-off!

We received a letter saying we owed on a bad check for $36.02 written at an Ames store on 5/28/00. The letter was very rude, insisting that we had to pay $56.02 within 30 day's. We have never heard of this bad check, it's been 4 years.

We didn't pay, then we got another letter insisting we pay $128.06. We called the company and said there was no was we would pay that without contacting a lawyer, she said she would take the $56.02. My husband paid with a credit card over the phone. Now what? How can they get away with this?
