ITT Technical Institute
Many text book errors, and one case of an instructor lacking course-related knowledge.inadequately prepared instructor and erroneous textbooks ripoff to students

Education & Science

I was a student at ITT Tech's Portland campus for 2 terms in 2003 and 2004. The following paragraphs are a summary of my experience with ITT's adequacies and inadequacies as an educative institute:

Books - The NIIT-published books that were sold to me were fine in my opinion, with the exception of the "Introduction to Computer Programming" textbook, which contained many errors.

I was also sold a book titled "PC Technology", put out by "Heathkit Educational Systems", which contained many errors. These errors were with spelling, grammar, punctuation, and logic. I found it difficult to follow at times, due to its author (s)' overtly informal writing style. I recall a student asking a instructor of the course using this text if the book was contradicting itself, and the instructor answering Yes.

Instructors I thought that one of my instructors was inadequately prepared knowledge-wise to lead a class in which she was an instructor. It was an "Introduction to Microcomputers" course, and this instructor was paired with another instructor who was more knowledgeable in the field. She (the instructor I claim lacked adequate knowledge) freely admitted that her knowledge in the field was shallow, and redirected many student's questions to the other instructor.

Other Opinion - I was pleased with the knowledge level of the majority of the instructors I had at ITT. They demonstrated extensive knowledge in their fields with their ability to answer students' questions which addressed topics not covered in the class material. I found the coursework to be easy, but I was mostly satisfied with the amount of information that was passed from the instructors and textbooks to the students. I would not discourage someone interested in ITT from pursuing an education at one of the many ITT campuses.

I would like to see positive reform in the textbook situation at ITT, and I think it could be good to have a system in place to ensure that all the instructors at ITT can answer reasonable student questions (reasonable questions being those which address the course material). Considering the high tuition and book prices at ITT, I believe the issues of an inadequately prepared instructor and erroneous textbooks to be fairly considered rip-offs.

I don't support allegations, which other people have made in a complaint filed on this web site, such as:
ITT Tech says job placement... Lie.
Or:
the only classes in which we learn anything, are the classes in which we dont actually use the books
