Attempted Ripoff

At 8:00 PM one night a woman called and started yelling in a Jamaican accent that I owed her company $2500 for some debt to Barclays Bank. I tried to explain to her that I don't owe anyone any amount of money and that I've never had dealings with Barclay Bank. She continued yelling threats that I couldn't completely understand through her broken English, but she confirmed the last 4 digits of my social security number, which I recognized as a veiled attempt at legitimizing her scam. Nevertheless it does worry me that scammers like this have access to sensitive data like this. I eventually just hung up the phone. The next 2 days we received similar calls to which we just hung up immediately.

Tuesday 3/29/04 I received a letter from CAMCO (attached) that says I owed Barclay Bank some $2500 and that I would have to reply in writing to have them send me proof of the debt and the name and address of the supposed creditor.

I also contacted a local investigative reporter in Rockford who is doing her best to expose these crooks. From her I understand that the city of Rockford, and local leaders welcomed CAMCO when it moved its headquarters there in October and CAMCO promised to bring 500 good-paying jobs. But former employees say they were abused and harassed by managers and the turnover rate at CAMCO is incredibly high. The mayor receives numerous complaints about CAMCO, which his spokesman says they pass on to the company to take care of. Both the mayor's office and the city's economic development group (called the Council of 100) are aware people are very unhappy with the company, but they aren't going to say anything negative after they worked so hard to bring CAMCO here.in its yearly recap in November, the Council of 100 actually used CAMCO as an example of the good businesses it brought to the area. And CAMCO stands to receive up to $5.1 million in grants and tax breaks from Rockford and the state over the next eight years or so.

This appalling! Earn your paychecks Illinois AG and FTC officials and put these scammers out of business! I don't have any outstanding debts, and the debt they're referring to certainly doesn't belong to me. The fact that they can conduct business in this manner is mind-boggling. I am going to forward a copy of this complaint to my local congressmen to see if they're interested.
