Additional, unnecessary "optional" fees added to enrollment

When enrolling online for classes at Santa Monica College you may be in for an unpleasant surprise after you fill out which classes you wish to take. While this college proudly advertises it's "$20 per class" all over LA county, you will find additional fees tacked on - fees which they claim are "optional."

If they are "optional" shouldn't there be an easy way to not pay for these?

Well, yes, there is but you have to go ON CAMPUS, risk losing the classes you signed up for, and argue your case in the burser's office. This is ludicrous. It is amazing for such a modern institution with such a great reputation throughout Los Angeles (I personally know of students from East L.A. Who take several busses just to attend) to have to stoop to such levels of deception. There is simply NO WAY to get away with not paying these fees online. Calls to the admissions office allowed no way to actually speak to a human representative or to not pay for these "optional" fees.

Perhaps SMC should be investigated for these dishonest practices.
