Door to door soliciting funds to support student trip to UK by selling magazine subscriptions

Young guy appproached me and later several other residents in our area claiming to be son of a neighbor, UVA student, who received a grant for a three-months study in the UK, ticket paid by father, other expenses to be subsidized by selling subscriptions. Magazines could be given to military personnel as a gift.

Consider scam since he repeted same story to other people changing details, like his residence. Suggested that I buy 4 to 6 subscriptions at $48 EACH. I gave check for one only and later, after seing this site, stopped payment on check.
