Mystery shopper ripoff! Sends check for $4998.00, Ontario Canada

Education & Science

I recieved a letter in the mail stating that I had been chosen to be a mystery shopper. I assumed it was junk mail but read on any way. It came with a check made out to myself for $4998.00.

I called the number on the letter and recieved a recording telling me I had reached Shopping Jobs Inc, and it wanted me to enter an extension. I entered the extension in the letter, and it directed me to a line that asked me to state my name. A man answered and was very short.

I was told all I needed to do to start my shopping assignment was to deposit the check in the bank. Once I deposited the check I was supposed to wait for it to clear, then withdrawl the amount for the check.

$300 dollars was supposed to go to me and then the rest was supposed to go to my "shopping assignments" that were listed in the letter. The man told me once the check had cleared I was supposed to call back for my assignment instructions.

The fact that he was so quick and that it seemed so simple got me thinking. I was going to look up the company name, but it wasn't stated in the letter I recieved. That struck me as VERY odd. I called the number back and they state the name right away, but I decided to try and talk to someone again to get some more information, but of course they didn't answer.

I noticed that the company was based in Idaho, but it had a stamp from Canada on it... Strange. Also a Canadian phone number... Even more strange. I tried to do a search on the business, but couldn't find any information about it. I then went to whitepages.com and did a search on the phone number. Turns out it is a personal cell phone. I then did a google search on the address and it is a real address, but it looks like it was somebodies home in a subdivision. It definitely was not a business address.

I searched the address again and it led me to this website. The statement I read was EXACTLY what I had recieved in the mail. After reading the statement it pointed my attention to the fact that the bank number was on the check. I called the number and it was a non active line.

I searched the bank on the internet and it is a real bank, so I plan on calling them to do a report tomorrow during business hours. I didn't fall for this scam because I was very careful. I just wanted to make as many people aware as possible!!!
