Home Theatre 'White Van Scam' in HOUSTON

I was approached by some of these guys with a Genesis Home Theater In a Box. I was at a Sonic Drive In, and they pulled up next to me. Not in a white van though, that's just what they're referred to as. This was a dark grey Chevy truck, had some nice wheels on it, and a logo for some kind of home theater shop.

The encounter went almost word-for-word from what others have experienced.

'ordering mistake was made... Got these extra systems'
'guy with a check, but we want cash...'
'it's true... Boss took home a plasma tv this same way...'
'we'd like to get about $500 but whats the closest you can do?'
'can you go to the ATM?'

I think these guys must read this pitch from a card. I don't mean to sound condescending by any means. They almost got me. It really happened fast, like they don't really give you time to think. Something kinda smelled funny about it though. I had seen a similar system, i think the name was DiVinci, but otherwise identical theatre system. You know, the one where there isn't a receiver, the whole brain is built into the subwoofer, and 2000 watts. Wow, thats a lot of power. Another red flag.

Like I said, they don't really give you time to think, and this was not the same brand that I had come across on the web, so I almost went for it. I had just sold some items locally and just so happened to have about 200 bucks cash on me. Almost lost it.

Luckily what saved me was that my wife really did call while I was talking to them. Said something about buying a couch. I said "well, sorry guys, my wife just called, found a couch that she wants. Can't do it today..." to which they left me alone, took off.

Boy, I felt like an idiot, even though I walked away from it. Coulda happened.
