Consumer prize reward, sent me a check for $1987.00, wanted me moneygram them back

Education & Science

I received a letter stating that I won a consumer prize reward from a random drawing. There was what looked like a genuine check in with the letter. The check for local taxes and administrative fees.

The check was for the amount of $1987.00. The letter told me to contact my processing agent Amy Hicks at the phone number 705-770-5775 to receive further instructions.

My husband and I are experiencing medical and financial hardship, so this seemed like the answer to our prayers. I am very saddened to see that it is a scam.

We were told to send them a moneygram for the same amount above, but for some reason the moneygram processor put in the wrong amount, so we ended up only sending $185.00 of the $1987.00 requested. The weird thing is, the check they sent me seems to have cleared.

I guess in a couple of days I will know for sure, but this is confusing. I really would like to hear from someone who knows how much damage this is going to do to us. I guess if the check eventually bounces, we are out at least the $185.00 we so ignorantly sent them.
