Fort Dorchester High Schools
School violated my rights as a parent

Education & Science

Two years ago, when my child was in the 9th grade, the school offered an Abstinence only program at our school. At that time, I did not want my son to attend the class due to the information I had found out about the program on the internet. I signed the permission slip forbidding him from attending and had a meeting with Mr. Darby, assistant principle, to let him know of my objections. I even spoke to the coach who gave the program. My son turned in the slip and told the teacher he was not allowed to attend the class. He was told that if he did not, he would have to do six pages of homework for the two week period the class was in session. The teacher then urged my son to take this class. Unfortunately, I did not find this out until 6 weeks ago. I have contacted Fort Dorchester High School demanding that they show the permission slip and return the sex survey my son participated in. Since my son was 15 when this occurred, I have the legal right to this information. After their investigation, I have been advised that the only way I can obtain this information is from Heritage and surprise - no answer. I have grave concerns how a religious group can teach a minor to disobey his parents decisions. I have enough concerns that this information will not be held in confidence as FERPA demands. I could understand if I neglected to check the group out and signed the permission slip in favor of this class, but I did not. I have lodged a complaint with Fort Dorchester High School, Dorchester District II Superintendent, and SC Board of Education. Additionally, I have filed a complaint with US Department of Education. As of this writing - No one has answered the complaint.
