I have a son, who completed 18 weeks of Security Guard Training here in N.Z., passed his test and received his certificate for level 2 Security.
Like many others who completed the course, he was guaranteed a job in Australia working at the Olympic Games, and after saving for his air fare, getting his passport, and with high hopes for success, not only financially but personally as well, set off for Australia.
Work was to begin on the 28th August... He flew out of N.Z. On 25th August.
To date he still has not been given a job. Every day since 28th, he has reported as was required only to be told that N.Z. Cert. Is not recognised in Australia and that he would have to go through further tests, which he duely did. And passed.
Friday 15th September, he reported once again, only to be told that he was not on the list... Two weeks in Australia, catching trains in and out of Sydney everyday expecting work, and living without work in the meantime has taken toll on any savings he may have had.
He was told to report back on Monday 18th... The games begin on Friday.
Why has this happened and who is responsible. I realise he is not the only one in this situation and there has been a great deal of publicity about this in the newspapers and on the Television, however that is not helping him or the others in the same situation.
I understand that the Australian Union is trying to sort things out. But this situation should never have arisen in the first place.
These people have left their families, homes and country to work over there, many of them actually giving up their regular jobs with the hope of bettering themselves financially... Now they are worse off.
Maybe my writing this will do no good... But on behalf of my son and the others who have been put in this situation I honestly feel that there has been a major rip off and some form of compensation should be made available under the circumstances.
