Ripoff Unprofessional Seminar Conduct Spells Trouble from the Start

Education & Science

We have been to many internet seminars in the past five years, but have never seen such unprofessionalism as we ran into with this one. They advertised one of their 90 minute seminars with a meal afterward at the Ramada Inn in Batesville, AR, on January 9th.

We called the reservation number and was told to leave our information, which we did. We asked them to call us back to confirm. They never did. We called back again a couple of days later, again getting an answering machine, letting them know that our ticket clearly said "lunch-12 PM" so we would just figure on being there. Still no one called.

The info said they have different meeting times available, but since our ticket was clearly pre-marked "lunch-12 PM", we felt we had no choice of times. Although there was no time listed for the actual start of the meeting, it said that the 90 minute seminar would be followed by the meal, and to arrive a half hour early. Deducting all that from 12 PM, we arrived shortly before 10 AM, and was told at the desk that the meal wasn't scheduled until two o'clock!

At that time, one of the internet representatives happened to be walking past with his two carts of equipment, so we got him involved in the conversation, and he confirmed the later lunch. When we tried to show him what was on the tickets, he had no explanation, other than to say that the company had been doing this for ten years, and tried to tell us that the time stated meant that we should be there at that time, and that the actual meeting would start at 12:30 PM!

If they have been doing this for ten years, then why can't they list the time of the actual start of the meeting. If the lunch comes afterward, it will automatically fall into place! Who in their right mind is going to show up for a seminar at noon and then wait for the middle of the afternoon before they can eat?

The room was already set up with chairs, and since he was just arriving, it was obvious that there had been no meeting that morning, so why couldn't they have gotten their act together to start it at the more logical time of 10:30 so that people could eat at a decent hour. They seem to forget that some people had to drive an hour or more to get there, and schedule time out of their day, not to mention, those who may have diabetes, and need to eat at normal times. This was totally inexcusable, and we walked out and drove the hour to get back home, fuming the whole way.

As a contractor, we have service calls and other customers to deal with. Their delaying the meeting until afternoon, when we already figured on being out of there right after lunch would have screwed up our whole day, and we would have also had unhappy customers because of rescheduling.

For lack of a web site (another red flag for a company who supposedly makes their living from selling web sites) we tried calling the only number we had, and after leaving a message for a "supervisor" the first time, we tried again and (after much "coaxing") got through to the same person (Mary) whose voice mail we got earlier. We tried to explain why we were upset, and she wasn't even interested in listening, as every time we opened our mouth this person cut us off and didn't want to let us finish a sentence. Also, we managed to find out that they didn't even have a reservation for our code number on the ticket, even after we had called in twice to try to confirm. She did admit that was their fault, but it was too little, too late. It was very clear that they were going to do things their way, and didn't want to hear what we had to say, and we finally hung up on her.

After that we started doing a web search (something I wish we had done earlier), and found out that they were formerly known as Galaxy Mall, and we had already lost over $4000 to them a few years ago when we were in Phoenix. All they wanted to do at that time was sell you web space, and we didn't know any better at the time, that the biggest part of selling anything online is getting people to come to your site. Any beginner can build a web page/site by reading the book that comes with the program. Getting people to visit it requires a lot more time, knowledge, and expense than these places lead you to believe, and that's why so many people fail at online businesses. Since we have already had a successful business for the last five years (no thanks to them), we have found this out the hard way.

All we can suggest is that if you aren't ready to make online sales a full time job, with a long learning curve to learn the special aspects of marketing to this medium, then you'd better keep your day job. Nothing comes free, and the lunch and organizer that they are giving away doesn't begin to cover the money you will waste with these people. If you learn it yourself, you can build a web site and get it online for less than $100, and that includes the program. Since the knowledge to get people to come to it takes a lot more investment of time and energy, think about it seriously before you give anyone that amount of money. Do your research on the web, and you can learn anything for free that these people would charge you thousands for.

Since you are here already, read the other reports on this company. I don't need to repeat them, but all that I have read are very true, and they share more information than I knew about personally. Good luck.
