Got a judgement against my wife without ever contacting us ripoff

A couple of weeks ago, we went online and got my wife's free annual credit report. All looked great. On a whim, we decided to look at the judgement section, even though we knew it would be empty.

Imagine our surprise when we discovered that a company known as Asset Acceptance had gotten a judgement of over $15,000 against my wife back in February of a year and a half ago! We had never heard of them, so we found their website on the internet and got their phone number.

We called and explained what we found on her credit report. We said we had never heard of them or the alleged debt, and had never been contacted by them. The person at the company said they had sent us a notice to appear in court in NY before the court date. When we asked the address it had been sent to, they responded that they sent it to my wife's address in NY. We informed the person that my wife had not lived there since 1999. The person got very angry, and told us to call the lawyers who got the judgement for them and slammed down the phone.

My question is, is it legal for them to get a judgement when they apparently went out of their way not to send notification to her about the court date. I suspect they knew her actual address, as they or their lawyers (I can't remember which), had checked her credit report in October which would have given a more recent address.

Now that they have a judgment, what do we do? We live in MN, and are hoping that a lawyer here may be able to do something to get this tossed. If this is legal, what is to stop me from making up a debt by Asset Acceptance, filing a lawsuit, and sending notification to a patently false address and then collecting the millions I say they owe me?
