Collins College
An honest look at Collins, 90% of what I learned was worthless, Ripoff

Education & Science

I attended Collins College (CC) in 2001 and earned a AA in Multimedia Design. I attended CC after having already earned a BA and worked as a secondary school teacher for a number of years. I say this only so that the reader will understand that I am not an 18 year old freshman with a chip on my shoulder. I attended CC in hopes that I would learn how to become a better web designer and be able to make a change in my career.

While attending CC I earned straight A's, which honestly is not saying a whole lot, but I want you to understand that I worked hard and every assignment and applied my self in each class.cc has a variety of instructors ranging from those who had just graduated from CC themselves to those who had some real experience in their fields; however I have to say that most of the instruction was a disappointment.

As I attend CC I kept telling myself that once I began my Track' courses, or those courses which applied directly to Multimedia Design that things would get better. I am sad to say that after spending thousand of dollars and countless hours, 90% of what I learned was worthless.

Once I had begun my Track' courses I found both the instruction and content was a continuation of the Core' or required classes, in both worthless content and poor instruction. For example, prior to attending CC I had created a number of websites; and after a few days in the HTML class, where students are taught how to create pages, many of the students were coming to me when they needed help rather than asking the instructor. I don't say this to brag, because I really didn't know that much, but only to show that the instructor was not only incompetent as instructor honestly knew little about web design.

My only advice to anyone thinking about attending CC is to look at all your other alternatives before you invest any money or time into CC. I have read what others have said on this site, about the design community's feelings in regards to a CC degree, and I have found for myself, that it is better not to even mention that I attended CC.

Instead I present my work and let it stand on its own. There is a reason CC has such a poor reputation in the design community, and any potential students need to consider that before part with their money and time. Attend a school with a good reputation and look at what the graduates from those schools are doing. Don't be afraid to ask the faculty at the schools you are considering attending, talk with both students who have graduated and who are currently attending. Talk with people in the field you are pursuing, see what advice they have in regards to which schools are worth attending

I hope this helps in regards to your attendance to Collins College
