Whirlpool Hot Water Heater burnt up shortly after purchasing it

The element in the brand new, nearly $300 hot water heater purchased by my mother burnt up a couple of weeks after she purchased it. My brother-in-law installed it and we know they will probably not honor the warranty that came with the item. It will be our fault, I'm sure. Just won't buy another hot water heater from Lowe's or by Whirlpool. Remember when whirlpool was the brand to buy?
