Poor communication, Unprofessional, Many delays in getting projects done

East Coast Fencing was scheduled to build a deck and fence at my house. Granted, it was a good price, so I guess I should have expected some mishaps. After signing on the dotted line and making a deposit (1/2 of the job cost), everything seemed great. Prior to the first day of work, we were told we would be receiving the building permit and the lumber would be delivered. None of this happened. Then, on the day the job was scheduled to begin, no one showed up. Also, we received no phone call after signing the contract.

Since no one showed up when the work was supposed to begin, we attempted to contact the proprietor, Steve Whetzel, but with no success. He finally called us a day later to inform us that his crew would not be out until the following week.

Work begin the following week, but progress was slow. The first day, they dug some holes, informed us that they would be returning shortly, then never returned at all that day. And, no phone call either, informing us why they did not return. As work slowly continued through the week, progress was made, but communication was still lacking. Many excuses for the slow progress were made by Steve Whetzel.

As the weekend neared, the fence was nearly complete, but the deck was still on temporary supports (some design errors were made so that footing inspections continued to fail). Work was put on hold for the weekend even though we had requested that work be completed by Friday.
The following week (now we are in a second week to build a simple deck and fence), the work was completed. Before a final inspection of the deck by Prince William County, Steve Whetzel demanded payment of the remainder of the contract amount. He became rude and upon receiving a post-dated check, did not mutter a word, not even a "thank you".

The quality of the work is good, but the customer service of East Coast Fencing and Steve Whetzel is atrocious. The company does not contact you regarding delays, work continues over a long period of time and Steve Whetzel does not appreciate your business.
My wife and I strongly recommend that you DO NOT hire this company.
