Construction & Repair

We bought our Oakwood Doublewide Home in Dececember of 1999 and it was delivered the last of April. After it was set up we did the walk through thing where they checked to make sure everything was right. There were lots of little things wrong but just the beginning of problems. I started noticing how cheap made everything was especially the base boards and all the wall board was pathetic. It had been pieced together in many places and some of it falling down.

The door stops had been placed on the wrong side of the door on every one of the doors. Then we started noticing hard objects underneath the carpet. One of the pieces found in the dining room was a piece from the 2nd bathroom bathtub wall which fit in the corner. And then there was the outside light fixtures that were missing which they never did come back and put those in and we ended up replacing that ourselves. Then the livingroom floor started to squeak after a week or two and I called Oakwood again and they did come out and crawled underneath the home and said that they tightend the screw or bolts underneath. Well it seemed like it was fixed but wrong, the next day it started to squeak again. A few years ago my brother was checking it for me and said there was a bolt underneath that was broke that is why it was squeaking. I still have a squeaky floor.

I had a problem with the island in the kitchen. I couldn't open the refrigertor door so they had to come out and move the island over about 4 inches. It left screw holes and a cut in the linoleum and they were supposed to replace the linoleum but did not.

I have had problems with the roof leaking and plumbing problems galore. With both bathrooms and when I do laundry the kitchen sink gurgles. And water backs up in the 2nd bathroom tub. And then theres the flushing problem in the second bathroom. Well we had a plumber come out and he said that its the main drain pipe that runs underneath the home is wavy and wasn't tied up like it should have been so its kind of warped so to speak. And it can't drain up hill. Then there was a problem with the air condition duct underneath the house. It was too short and didn't connect good to the other side and had been laying underneath the house and all my air and heat was going into the atmosphere. So you imagine what my electric bill was? Let me say alot higher than it should have been.

Then the air conditioner conduit where the water drains off the air conditioner outside got stopped up and it backed up in the laundry room. Water was everywhere and after that the floor swelled up which leads me to the part about my flooring. They told us the floor would not swell up or buckle that it was a special kind of flooring not particle board flooring which we specified we did not want, that we wanted plywood flooring. But they insisted this flooring was better (I forgot the name of the flooring they called it) but it is supposed to be made with the same glue as they make ships with. And the flooring is not suppose to buckle up or crumble. That is what they told us. Well they lied because my floor buckled and it is falling apart in the bathrooms where we have had leaks.

I had a leak in the master bedroom inside the window and I called a friend that is a roofer and he said a few shingles had blown off and he replaced them but meantime he said there were staples sticking up all over the roof meaning they weren't holding the shinlges down completely. They had worked their way up out of the shingles. So I had to pay for that to get fixed. Now that was probably 2 or 3 years ago but now already having more leakage with water spots on the ceiling in the master bedroom. For a house that is only 7 years old it is falling apart. Soooo cheap made and I paid way to much for this piece of crap.

Ok now the harassment part. I was almost a month behind on my house payment one time about a year after I had bought the house due to illness. But I caught up on the payments and every once in awhile I am a few days late but very seldom. Most of the payments are made on time. I bought my own homeowners insurance because their insurance was way to high. Well I let my insurance expire and they canceled me before I even knew it was due because I didn't even receive a notice that it was due and I had completely forgotten about it. So my insurance had lapsed maybe 3 months. Well Oakwood ya know they just took it upon themselves to add their own insurance. Well I called and told them I had reinstated my insurance with my company. Well they insisted I had to pay them I believe it was $790.00 at the time but said they would only charge me $300 which was for the lapsed time. And they let me pay it out with 3 month installments along with my regular house payment. Aren't they so kind? Well after I got the $300 paid I started getting phone calls from them saying I was late on my house payments. I kept arguing with them no I am not. Well this is what I think they have done. They left the remainder of the $790.00 on my mortgage leaving $490.00 which is real close to my house payments. Well I have talked myself blue trying to explain to them that I am not behind on my payments and I have every canceled check and proof that I have made every payment. I even called my attorney and he sent them all the proof. I still get a call or 2 or 3 about the second or third week of the month saying I am late. Or I need to call them. And this has been going on for about 6 years now and they call every month. I will not answer the phone and talk to them at all any more for I am done talking to these people. Of course it is Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance that took over Oakwood. These people have caused me so much grief and stress for the past 6 years I just can't take it anymore. So I will have nothing to do with them or talk to them period. They are sorry business people and their homes are a hunk of junk.

Someone needs to get a class action law suit started against them. I am tired of dealing with them.
