Adam Brown, contractor, beware Adam Brown-home repair, general contractor rip-off South Bend Mishawaka

My wife hired (to build a sunroom) a now defunct company called Brown and Company Construction (ran by Adam Brown) in 2005 on his claim that he was in the past a professional home builder. We checked some references for some general remodeling he had done in the area and he checked out OK. Unfortunatley, we did not check out any homes he had previously built to check for quality. Had we taken the time to check, we would have found out that there wasn't any homes built by Adam Brown. We found out later through an acguaintance of Adam Brown, the most he had done in construction up until that time was grunt for a home building construction crew.

The quality of his work proved that to be true. To make a long story short, he exposed our attic to the elements, causing damage to our kitchen ceiling, which he did not repair, he cut off the ground wires to some outlets while he wired the room for electric, the roof to the room sagged but he refused to acknowledge it, the workmanship in general was very poor (the professional witness for our claim against Adam, which we won, said in court that it was the worst he had ever seen. He was the South Bend City inspector, he had seen alot), plus he hardly ever showed up. He worked on it for over 2 months, and he never did finish it. We had to hire another contractor to repair and finish the room. There are too many other complaints to mention, but you get the idea. Also, I have many pictures to substantiate any claims.

I am filing this consumer complaints against Adam Brown so people can be aware of his dishonesty in his business dealings. He would even lie about things that had nothing to do with his business, such as claiming that he was a high school state wrestling champion for Clay High School. His name isn't mentioned in ANY records. (I checked out of curiosity). That is just an example of the type of person he is. We realized after awhile that anything that came out his mouth was more than likely a lie. Hirer beware, he (initially) comes across as being extremely friendly, but as an example to show you how low he can go, he told a neighbor that HIS BROTHER did all the shoddy work on our home.

In my mind the worst thing he did was take advantage of my wife when she was very ill. He had asked for final payment before the job was finished and I said no. I found out the next day that after I went to bed, he hounded my sick wife (her being sick was a fact he was well aware of) until she paid him, promising of course that he would finsih the job.

With that being said, Adam Brown has a history of starting different businesses under different names. It is possible that he may start a business under the name of his brother, Anthony. Although he went to Mississippi for awhile, he is presently still working in the South Bend/Mishawaka area, but I can't tell you under what name he may be presently using for his business. He may be sub-contracting. If you're looking for a contractor and the name of Adam or Anthony Brown comes up, it would be in your best interest to look elsewhere.
