Fire. Defective electric range shorts out goes on fire ripoff

On 8/10/02 I purchased a Frigidaire model # FES367ASD electric glass top, slide in range with the control panel on the front. I paid $884.89 for it.

On 5/11/05 a pot of water on the stove boiled over. Sparks and black smoke began issueing from the front of the stove near the control panel. I might have had a serious fire on my hands however my children happened to be visiting that night and managed to pull the plug on the stove.

I spoke to the sales people where I had purchased the stove and to the Frigidaire service technicians, for this area, who came to look at it. Both parties stated that "this should'nt have happened". From these statements I was lead to believe that there must have been a defect in the stove which allowed the water to get in thereby shorting out the wires and starting the fire.in the meantime I was given a repair estimate of over $500.00.

I called the Electrolux corporation in Georgia and spoke to a gentleman named Ernest who told me that if the service technician stated that the stove was defective Electrolux would give me a new stove. I then contacted the head service technician at the appliance repair service and informed him of my conversation with Ernest. He said that he would have to talk to the company [Electrolux] and would get back to me.

Over a week later he finally called me back and told me that Electrolux would not give me a new stove but would only give me a 30% rebate on my purchase price towards a new stove.

The fact that Electrolux is offering me this paltry rebate proves to me that they know the stove was defective. However, as a senior on a fixed income I can't afford a new stove even with the rebate. Neither can I afford to have the stove repaired and even if I did where's my guarantee that this won't happen again perhaps with more serious consequences.

I'm really upset and angry that a name like Frigidaire / Electrolux, that so many Americans have trusted for so many years, could turn out to be a company that treats it's customers in such cavalier fashion and does not stand behind it's products.
