Extreme ripoff What to avoid to keep from being ripped off

Ryan Perez arrived 2 1/2 hours later than promised to repair a garage door. His large phonebook advertisement states We give you the price before we start. No hidden costs or surprises."

We were given no estimates. The bill was excessively high. Claimed his parts come with a "lifetime warranty, " but won't provide written warranty.

Total charge for 1 hour: $676.24. Charged $99 for a set of cables, $236 for two torsion springs, $129 for 10 long stem rollers, $49 for a center shaft bearing, $39 for the service call, and $65 for labor.

This is twice as much as charges from legitimate, well-established businesses who would charge 2 torsion springs $190 including labor, $20 for the set of cables, $6 each for the rollers, $15 for the center shaft bearing. Total $344.66. Another company would charge $309.

Makes false claims that his competitors use inferior parts, including one in business for 50 yrs. Claimed to be BBB member when he wasn't at that time. Also had a suspended contractor's license shortly thereafter for bounced check per Wash State Dept of Labor and Industries.

Ryan Perez basically works out of his truck, hides behind a PO address, has been in business < 2 years, and preys on naive customers.

BBB was not helpful in resolving the complaint.

Lessons learned:
1) Beware of grandiose ads and companies in business less than two years. Many want to be at the beginning of the alphabet, e. G Anchor Doors.
2) Avoid companies which use PO Box addresses and arrive in private trucks.
3) Check the L&I licensure status first and BBB to see if any complaits have been made. BBB membership means very little.
4) Get a written estimate before the work starts. If high, say good-bye.
5) Avoid business with Anchor Doors.
