Water Softner - GE Water Softne

Have been working for over a year with several plumbers... Bought a new GE water softner, which "works"... But the water is un-useable. Tastes terrible, smells bad when heated. Local plumbers are stumped, suspect it is a flaw in the tank curing process.

GE says... It must be the water. (we are on City water, in a condo, and no other condo has problems).
GE Says... We (GE) can't do anything.
GE Says... Throw it out (ignore $750 spent on unit and service calls, and hassle)
GE says... Buy a new one...
GE says... Tough Luck.
