Made me choose between seeing dad with cancer or working the week before christmas

I was hired to work at Applebees as a waitress while in college. Applebees knew I was in college and that my family lived in Arizona. After 6 months of working my butt off for tips (just to give $15 of it each time to the bartender and hostess) I found out my dad was just diagnosed with colon cancer. I called my work crying my eyes out to tell them there was no way I could come in. My boss told me I needed to bring a note from the hospital saying he has cancer. Come on, I'm not that good of an actress, and not that sick minded.
Soon it was time for Christmas. My dad was still in the hospital and my school lets out for 4 weeks. Since my managers knew from the beginning that I was in college, I assumed I would be taking a leave for the break. I asked two months in advance about it and they said they would discuss it. Finally, the week after Thanksgiving (a week before Christmas break) they told me I could not go see my sick father, or spend the holidays with my family (who I only get to see once a year as it is).
I explained that my college is residential and nearly everyone lives in the dorms. The dorms close for all of break unless you A) Pay to stay everyday or B) You are an athlete during the winter season. They pretty much said well you are S.O.L. So I asked if I could at least have the week of Christmas off so I could visit my family for a short while. "Nope!" Says the head manager. He said Christmas was too busy and I would just have to stay and spend it alone if I wanted to keep my job.
Needless to say I walked out on those cold-hearted people. I was sure to grab their corporate number off the back board before I left. The board claimed that if you ever had a complaint and could not talk/resolve it with the manager to call them. Well I did and they pretended to be shocked and horrified at the situation. Who did they forward me to? The corporate manager for the same crappy Applebees - or CRAPPLEBEES as the workers call it. I called him back since he decided to call at 9pm two weeks after I called corporate. I left my number and asked him to get back to me - did he?! No!!!
