Chocolate ice cream left burning/tingling sensation on the tongue

Cafes, Bars, Restaurants

We got a quart of chocolate ice cream tonight. While eating it, all of us noticed a burning/tingling sensation on our tongues. I called the store and asked if there had been other complaints and if we needed to worry about getting sick. They said they hadn't had any other complaints, and they thought it tasted fine. I would like to know what the cause of this could be.
