Rip-Off collecting bogus debt from little old lady

Brian and April are two of four persons employed by Capitol Acquisitions attempting to collect a debt from my mother who never had an account with the company in the first place. They refused to send any written information about the claimed account, only stating that the account had been closed in 1993 with a balance owing that was never paid. The amount requested was in excess of 2300.00 dollars, but they would "settle" for 667.00. They also stated that several letters had been sent to the address, but of course no such mail was ever received. I have spoken with Citibank, they have no record of my mother ever being a creditor with them, and the credit reports I have obtained go all the way back 45 years, with no account for Citibank showing anywhere.

I have reported the telephone calls to the local police in Van Nuys, and was informed that, given certain circumstances, the behavior of these people might be felonious and therefore proscecutable. I have obtained information regarding recent acitions against CAMCO Capitol Acquisitions, and plan to file complaints with the Attorney General for both California and Illinois, as well as the Federal Trade Commission, and the Attorney General for the USA. If anyone has been treated to interaction with these cretins, or you know of anyone who has been similarly victimized, please put it in writing, call the police and report the action, and write to the Attorney General so that legal action may be taken against them. Under no circumstances should anyone give them money, either by check or bank draft, nor should they go along with requests to pay off any claimed balances. They cannot ruin your credit, they cannot put a lien on property, or anything else that they may threaten. Don't keep it to yourself, either -tell your family and friends that you are a current target for this scam, and have them help you write letters also. Be pro-active for yourself - get a copy of your credit report, look it over, and assure yourself that the information is correct and timely. When these clowns try to scam you, you'll be clear about your true situation, and therefore not so likely to be a victim due to fear or lack of information.
