Heartless disregard for victims of accident after car totaled City Of Industry

A couple of years ago I refinanced my car through Household Auto Finance because they offered me lower payments. The payments were somewhat lower and I was OK with them. I made my monthly payments on time and had no problems.

Then in 2003 my car got totaled by a hit and run driver. My spouse who was driving the car was sent to the ER and the car got towed to the wrecker yard. My insurance company got me a rental and paid Household the book value of the car but I owed a small gap (difference) between what State Farm paid and what Household wanted.

I contacted Household by phone to try to get them to cut the debt since I could not obviously continue to make a payment on a car in the wrecker yard AND the new car which I was forced to go out and buy because I needed a vehicle to get to and from work. When I called I got shuffled around to different people and even got cut off. Disgusted, I send an e-mail through Household's website and that was never answered. I even wrote Household using Certified Mail with a return receipt (and so I know they got the letter) explaining the situation, but no one responded.

I finally got one woman at Household to refinance the loan to lower the payments, which she did but then when I got my "new" bills they included "Impound Fees" added to them. I again contacted Household to get clarification as to what the so-called Impound Fees were but they refused to answer.

Then I got a call from a rude, sarcastic and pushy Household collector who asked me how I paid bills and why it was "inconvenient" for me to "do the right manly thing" and pay my bills. I tried to explain the situation to him but he kept cutting me off and getting nastier so I terminated the conversation. I also got in trouble for using company lines for a personal conversation so I told Household not to call me at work again.

I continued to receive bills including more and more Impound Fees and finally decided I had had enough and quit responding or trying to contact them. If they refinanced the loan and decided to add more and more "Fees" to the so-called "refinanced" loan then refused to answer why then I figured the heck with them.

Household has been totally uncooperative and unsupportive in light of having had my spouse injured in the accident, having lost income as a result of the accident, and having to buy a new car at a higher payment than what I was already making to Household in the first place. I can't make TWO car payments obviously, and our domestic budget has been strained to the point that making our bills has become a stretch. Now Household is threatening "legal action." How do these people sleep at night???
