USAA is all family? A severely dysfunctional one

I have had USAA auto insurance for years and years. Like many, many other people right now, I have no job. I am disabled and live on social security disability of less than 10,000 a year. I have been late on my insurance payments but I have always paid before the final due date.

November 9th I got a letter from USAA (after I had just paid my insurance premium) telling me that since I've been late in the past, I have been placed on a "pay-in-full" plan and if I don't pay my policy in advance for a year I will be cancelled. The author of the letter, Thomas Woods, Assistant Vice President of Policy Services, then went on to tell me how USAA is a family and USAA's customers are not customers but members of this family. I was given the option of signing up for automatic payments which I was willing to do but they demanded a "down payment" of a year in advance. All of this 7 weeks before Christmas with me disabled and living on a seriously limited income.

I don't know about the rest of you but my idea of a loving family is not one who demands every dime you have jeopardizing whether you have a home or not, eliminating what tiny Christmas you can scrounge up, if your "family" treats you like this, they are abusive.

I don't mind being on automatic payments but I don't make the kind of money that can afford to pay a year in advance. If USAA is going to be ruthless and cruel, I would appreciate it if they didn't try to disguise it with all this dripping sweetness about being my family. This is the way they treat the families of veterans.
