I customer trying to pay debt, collector is extremely rude, refuses to include account # reflected on credit report in regards to balance due

I am an average Joe trying to pay a debt with this collection agency. I have no doubt the debt is mine. I have made several attempts to pay this debt but because of a request I made I am being turned down and treated extremely rude.
The debt in question has a certain account number listed on my credit report.
The account number on their invoice from the collection company is different then the number reflected on my credit report. When I asked collection company to have the account number reflect the correct account number listed on my credit report so I could prove that they are the same, They refused. They then went on so say I have to take the risk and hope they apply this to the correct account, That I could just dispute the charge if they make a mistake or if I didn't trust them to do this correctly.
Again I was trying to pay the debt in full, not negotiation a lower amount, not disputing the bill, I was trying to pay it!!!
I can understand why people would not want to talk with such rude and incorporative people. Their Goal is to not settle any debt you may have with them.
I recommend calling the original company where the debt occurred to seek repayment options. I believe this company is not to a valid collection agency..
