Violation of Civil Rights—HARRASSMENT OVER MY NAME

I desperately wanted to do business regarding a conversion life insurance policy so I did everything to get to this meeting with Ms. Deng. There is a time limit on the conversion policy.

In short order, Ms. Deng turned to me and said, "Your name is peculiar, different; it is not right. Where did you get your name? Where did you get 'Lee' from—you are not Chinese? Are you Chinese? You have no business with that name."

I responded, "I am an American and that's all you need to know."

Ms. Deng insisted.

I responded with some warmth in my system, "You know, the last time I was accosted like this about my name I was in a beauty supply store and when I gave my debit card to the clerk to pay for purchases she looked at the name and had a fit. She told me she was going to call the police and report the theft of a credit card. The owner heard all the fuss and came over. She told the clerk in Korean, (she told me in English), that she said, "No. You are wrong. This is America. You can be any name. You can name yourself any name. You can even name yourself 'Paper Bag' if you want. This is a free country. You are wrong. She is perfectly right to have that name or any name."

I did not file a case against that store for a civil rights violation because the owner is cognizant although the clerk was very ignorant of American rights and ways.

Ms. Deng continued. Even when I tried to tell her how offensive she was behaving overall she continued. So, I didn't get done what I intended to get done.

It is my general impression of MetLife as a whole, that the company has customer service issues, serious customer service issues. I have dialed numbers until I know them from memory trying to get this ONE thing done. I have ran into all kind of problems. Something is wrong at MetLife.

In the elevator going down to leave the building I was bemoaning all the time I had just wasted and could not do business. The lone man in the elevator said, "You got those papers in your hand. You went to MetLife. Did you talk to Meng? You can't do business with her." I'm under the impression that this agent may not be working for a commission so she can afford the luxury of loss business.
