Lied to me about how much i owe and keep changing the price on me

They keep changing the amount of money i owe them. When i was first contacted by them by letter, they said i owe $850.. I agreed to pay them $50. So i wouldn't get my taxes taken away this coming year again. Started in june in november i called because i was curious if i was going to be removed from default status and they said no and when i asked my balance they said i owed 1,921.89 still. I asked if they had somewhere online where i could check my balance they said no and they would mail me something, they never did. Am still paying this but im questioning if they really are a real company and wonder if my money is counting towards my defualted loan
