Business & Finance

Report dated May 15

Several months ago I responded to an ad in the classified section of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette of Little Rock, Arkansas, offering an opportunity to earn $700 per week at home stuffing 500 envelopes per week.
I sent a letter of inquiry to the address receiving a response from Marpeg Homeworkers, P.O. Box 540102, Flushing, N.Y., 11354. I received instructions to complete a 1-page job application and to send $25.00 which would be refunded TRIPLE upon completion of the first 500 envelopes. This I did.

About 2 weeks later, I received acknowledgement of the $25.00 from Training & Aftercare Center, P.O. Box 313, Akron, Alabama, 35441, with instructions to send an additional dollar for each 100 envelopes, i.E. $5.00.
Now being very suspicious, I phoned the U.S. Post Office in Akron, Alabama, for a name and street address on this P.O. Box. I was informed that this box had recently been closed and that I was "most likely" dealing with a scam. They gave me a phone number to call in Tampa, Florida.

The lady I talked with in Tampa seemed to believe strongly that this indeed was a scam. She told me to write Marpeg in New York for a full refund and that, if I did not receive it in a reasonable time, I should contact my local post office for fraud proceedings.
On Aprilk 22, I sent a letter to Marpeg asking for full refund. I received a reply from Training & Aftercare Center — Refund Division, P.O. Box 546, Cottondale, Alabama, 35453, pleading for me to give their training program a chance.

Why does it take 5 sessions and this expense to train someone to put folded material in an addressed, stamped envelope, and sealing it? This communication also promises an eventual refund of $ 322.50 including a hire-on bonus of $225.00.

Efforts on the internet and thru the phone companies to obtain names, street addresses and phone numbers have failed. The most recent communication from Cottondale, Alabama, does have the name "Louis Allen, Assistant Hiring Director."
