Fifth Third Bank
Took me for $235 in predatory, unethical fees. Worst. Bank. Ever

Business & Finance

I'll outline the two (2) instances in which Fifth Third Bank used unethical business practices to rip me off.

1.in the first instance, I had an account balance of $2.25 and I knew a monthly $10 charge was coming up, so I went to make a deposit at the ATM. It turns out the ATM was down, and I didn't have time to get to another ATM. I should also include the fact that I am always working when the bank is open, so the ATM is my only option. The ATM continued to be down in the following days, and the $10 charge was posted to my account.By the time I could make a deposit, they had charged $81 in predatory overdraft fees!

2.in the second instance, I can take some of the blame since it was partially my fault. I had meant to withdraw $420 from my Chase bank account to pay my rent, but having just gotten off a 16hr shift, I accidentally took the money out of my 5/3 account, which having just recovered from the aforementioned incident, had a balance of $0.85. I had no reason to check my bank balances, so this went unnoticed until I got the letter from 5/3 in the mail a few days later, and by that time, they had already charged me $65 for the mistake, now for Act II: As soon as I got the letter, I deposited $500 which brought the account to $5.86 (that monthly $10 charge had come up again, which as soon as it was pending, I had the payee return). Here's the catch... The "account balance" was $5.86, but the "available balance" was still pegged at (-394.14), so they continued to bloodsuck their daily $8, as well as another $33 "overdraft fee".

So today, 5 days after said incident, I was finally off work during bankers hours for the first time in months, and I went to see the manager with a balance of (-73.15) (a total of $235 in fees from both incidents!).

The manager was the most unhelpful person on the face of the earth, and kept on droning her line about how nothing's the bank's fault.., it's not the bank's fault that the ATM was down, it's not the bank's fault that they can't deposit money, blah blah blah, etc, etc, etc.

All said, my entire experience with Fifth Third Bank has been horrible. They have the worst fees, the worst business practices, and a bunch of terrible staff (not all of them, I have met some nice ones). If I can't get this fixed, it's definitely goodbye 5/3, hello some bank that isn't in it to rip you the f off!
