We were delinquent on our Sears account and not at all surprised when we received a letter of collection from Universal Fidelity. We shortly paid the full amount and settled this debt.
Nearly one year later we began receiving letters of collection from LVNV asking for about half of what we had already paid to Universal for the same Sears account (we only had one). We contacted them at the number listed, explained the situation to a very rude CSR who told us that it is not their problem and for this to go away we would have to pay them or they would report it on our credit as a delinquent account. We called back again and spoke to a slightly less rude CSR who told us this is an attempt to collect on our Sears account and for us to have it removed we would need to produce a statement of payment with Unuversal showing the full original Sears account. We offered a copy of our bank statement and a copy of the cancelled check and we were asked not to send these items as they did not show the original creditor.
We contacted Universal who easily located our long since paid debt and promised to send the payment statement. We waited 2 weeks it never arrived, we called again and they again promised to send it. When it did not arrive we called and were then told one specific person only can help us, Trish, and we were transferred to her voicemail.in a month we called no less than 15 times and never received a return call. We tried the long route again with regular CSR's and were always routed back to Trish's vm. I sent several emails to the corporate Universal email address. I mailed a letter pleading for help. No Luck.
About another year went by and we received another letter from LVNV now with a higher balance. We contacted Sears who could not or would not tell us who our original debt was sold too or if it had been sold twice. We contacted LVNV who told us we needed the letter from Universal to close ts account. They now (2 years later) have not stopped the incessant phone calls and letters demanding money.
I want to just accept their most recent settlement offer so it will just go away already and allow my credit to repair from its only blemish and a huge one to boot. However, I can't bringmyself to pay for something that I have already paid and it was paid over 3 years ago in full.
I no longer have an account at the same bank from which I wrote the payment check to Universal and they did not provide the cancelled checks.
How do I get this off of my credit report or prove that I don't actually owe LVNV a dime
