They want money but can't proove that you owe them

I received a letter from ALW Sourcing, LLC on December 18th. Apparantly, they're trying to collect a debt that goes back to 1987 in which I paid off in the early 90's. Being close to the holidays, this was very upsetting to me. I called and spoke with a representative and he went through all his routine; "This is an attempt to collect a debt...".

Well I told the gentleman on the phone that "first of all, you want me to present you with documentation for something over 20 years ago?" "You're an organization with fancy, scary letters, fancy websites, but you don't have any documentation or proof that I owe money?" I told him that this isn't going to fly legally and he told me that this wasn't about legal, it's about doing the right thing.

I responded with "well unfortunately I can't provide you with proof that I paid off this loan and you can't provide me with proof that I didn't so let's just call this closed". He told me "not a problem" and then told me not to be alarmed if I happen this see this on a credit report. I have to worry about this just a little.
