False Award Claim Notification/Attempted Sweepstakes Fraud, Canada, Canada

My mom contacted me asking if I could look over a letter stating that she won some money from some company. She gave me the "Award Notiication" and the check that came with it.

Many of the red flags that other reports mentioned here were brought to my attention instantly; no return addresse, no letterhead, no internet resource or contact info (other than the one we were instructed to call to claim our money), no mention of the specific sweepstakes name, and finally the peripheral qualifying corporate logos of UPS, FedEx and Western Union among others.

This letter reminded me of a similar Nigerian Internet Scam and so I decided to do some internet searching. Guess what I found out? This letter is a SCAM! As much as I wanted to believe in free money, there is no free lunch!

My mom is a decent, honest, and hard working person. I wish I could punch these individuals in the eye while thier mothers watch.
