Never had an account with MCI, but collections being pursued

This morning at around 9:00 AM we received a phone call from a person who identified herself as a collections agent with CBCS. She was trying to recover approximately $350 she said was owed to MCI. She knew very specifically my wife's full name, as well as current and past addresses.

Firstly, we have never had an account with MCI, either for our land line (local/long distance is provided by AT&T in Little Rock) or for our wireless providers (we've been with Sprint and Cingular). So it's rather impossible that we could be responsible for any amount MCI would be attempting to collect.

Second, there are inconsistencies between the supposed delinquency time frame and our residency. We've been at this home since yet the alleged overdue payment is dated from the year 2003 from my wife's previous address. It seems quite likely that someone's been fudging the numbers to try to slip in under the statute of limitations.

CBCS apparently bought the bad debt from LVNV Funding, LLC. Whether it was MCI, LVNV or CBCS who erroneously attributed the debt to us, I can't say at this time. But it's CBCS who has made the call, and it is they who will have to answer to me for wasting my time, and especially if there is any negative impact on our credit scores.

To her credit, the agent was very courteous and respectful, and actually seemed interested in helping trace the source of MCI's claim. However, she could do nothing more than verify our information and provide an address whereby we could dispute the debt.
