I have had free checking with Wells Fargo for years. I have my pay check automaticly deposited and the free checking account is a benefit.
A couple of months ago I went into the bank. The teller told me I should have a different type of checking account than I had. She said it would still be free but it would have additional free features such as free travelers checks, which I was very interested in. She also said my checks would be printed for free. She said I qualified for this better checking account because my house if financed through Wells Fargo. She changed me over to the new account type and I ordered new checks.
The first month I got charged a service fee. I called the toll free customer service number and they verified that I should not have been charged. They removed the charge and said they would fix my account so that would not happen again.
This month I am charged the service fee again. I called the toll free number and got the charge waved but I was told I would have to return to the branch to have a waver put on my account. This is very inconvenient.
