Bogus collection attempt of non-existent debt

AFNI states I owe $106.00 for a debt to Verizon. I don't owe Verizon this money. Verizon never attempted to collect this money, yet AFNI suddenly owns this debt. Curious. It is impossible to begin trying to verify anything with AFNI without giving away additional info on yourself. Try asking them to recite to you what they want to know (insert laugh here). This is on my credit report and looks like it may stay there. How is it that AFNI can deliver inaccurate reports and do one harm and bear no penalty?
I disputed this falsity with Experion in March and they notated the dispute but failed to remove this from my report, simply indicating it is closed. Next I apply for a car loan and the credit manager asks me if I know I am severely delinquent on $106.00, that it doesn't match my profile, and that I should probably fix the error. I asked him how. Looks like I get to see this wart on my credit report for the next seven years. Just dandy.
I also see where there are over 500 similar reports on usacomplaints.com. Are we all imagining this as a result of telepathic sympathy? I don't think so.
